LFP Chemistry

Lithium iron phosphate — the original safe, long-life cathode chemistry. 4,000+ cycles, no thermal runaway, and a supply chain built on domestically abundant iron and phosphate.

What is LFP?

LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate, LiFePO₄) is the olivine cathode chemistry that prioritizes safety, longevity, and supply chain accessibility above maximum energy density. In LFP, lithium bonds with iron, phosphorus, and oxygen in a stable olivine crystal structure. The strong iron–phosphate bond prevents the oxygen release that causes thermal runaway in other cathode chemistries — making LFP the safest large-format lithium-ion chemistry available.

Performance Profile

  • Cycle life: 3,000–5,000+ cycles to 80% capacity at standard rates; exceeding 6,000 cycles at partial depth of discharge (ideal for grid storage)
  • Nominal voltage: ~3.2–3.4V
  • Energy density: 120–180 Wh/kg (cell level) — lower than NMC but improving with LMFP/BMLMP variants
  • Temperature range: -20°C to +60°C operational with active thermal management
  • Safety: No oxygen release under abuse; UL 9540 and NFPA 855 compliant configurations widely available

Market dominance in grid storage: LFP accounts for the vast majority of utility-scale BESS deployments globally due to its superior cycle life economics, inherent safety for outdoor/indoor installation, and total cost of ownership over 15–20 year project lifetimes.

American Supply Chain

LFP's two key transition metals — iron and phosphorus — are among the most domestically abundant battery materials in the United States. Minnesota's Mesabi Range provides iron ore; Florida and North Carolina provide phosphate rock. Building battery-grade iron phosphate (FePO₄) processing capacity domestically is the key investment needed to complete an American LFP supply chain.
